Upcoming Event : National Seminar on Cross Border Trade on 6th and 7th November, 2009

  The idea of starting a Commerce College was mooted by Dr. Hemanta Kumar Baruwa, the Ex-Principal of the college with the inspiration of prominent businessman Mr. Madanlal Malpani and social worker, Late Debendra Nath Kakoty and some leading citizens of Lakhimpur Town. A public meeting to this effect was convened on 13-03-1971 which was presided over by Late Mahananda Bora, ex-M.L.A. and the public endorsed the idea of setting up a College for imparting commerce education at North Lakhimpur. But the college could not obtain permission for its functioning in the same year and subsequently another meeting was held on 17-01-1972 and an Ad-hoc Steering Committee was formed under the Chairmanship of Late D.N. Kakoty and Shri B.N. Sarma Baruah and Dr. H.K. Baruwa as Secretaries. Late Bimal Hazarika, Head Master Bogolijan High School as Joint Secretary and Shri M.L. Malpani as Treasurer. Lakhimpur Chamber of Commerce and Ananda Tea Estate also extended help and donation at the time of establishment of the College.

The College was inaugurated on 4th September, 1972 in the North Lakhimpur College auditorium and the North Lakhimpur College authority was kind enough to allow holding 1st year Pre-Degree Classes in the morning hours. A total of 69 students were admitted to the 1st year class. Dr. K.K. Karan, Dr. M. Rajbongshi, Late H.C. Thakur and Late B.C. Hazarika rendered honourary services in teaching Commerce subjects. Dr. B. Saharia (now Controller of Examination, Tezpur University) and Late K.N. Changkakoti prepared the College Emblem and the chosen Motto “Vidyaya Vidyante Amritam” enshrined on it.

The Commerce stream offers Major course in Accountancy, Business Management and Banking and Monetary Management.

In the year 1993, the college introduced Arts stream to meet the demand of the students in particular and the public in general. In the Arts stream the College offers major courses in Sociology, Political Science, Education, Economics and Assamese.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) approved introduction of Vocational courses at Lakhimpur Commerce College in three subjects viz. Computer Application, Office Management and Secretarial Practice and Tax Procedure and Practice from the 1994-1995 academic session. This added another feather in the cap of Lakhimpur Commerce College.

The Dibrugarh University allowed permission for running a Contact Centre of Distance Education with three subjects Viz. Commerce, Economics & Assamese from the academic session 2002-03. Prof. N.Sarmah is the co-ordinator of the contact centre.

IGNOU has established a Study Centre No. 413 at the college with as many as 42 (fourty two) Programmes leading to Masters Degrees,Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates including Master of Business Administration (MBA). The centre is equipped with Audio-visual and Teleconferencing and Satelite Interactive Terminal(SIT) facility under Edu-Set . Prof. J. Sarmah is the Co-ordinator of the centre.

The college has been accredidated B+ Grade by the National Assessment and Accrediation Council (NAAC). As a follow up to the NAAC accreditation, the college has set up an IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) for quality sustenance and enhancement.

The academic campus of the College is located in the heart of Lakhimpur town. Its location is easily identifiable because of its proximity to the residences of the Deputy Commissioner and District Superintendent of Police, District and Session Judge and Institutions like Post Graduate Training College, District Library etc.

Course Updates
 Career Oriented Course
From the academic session 2008-2009, Lakhimpur Commerce College has introduced Career Oriented Course in “INSURANCE”. As per UGC guidelines the syllabus of the course has been prepared by the College of its own with the help of subject experts. The aim of the course is to create self employment and empowerment of the students will be equipped with a certificate with a conventional degree.
 Computer Accounting Courses
 The college has introduced certificate course in Computer Accounting for the for the TDC (Commerce) students. The Students will be able to equip themselves with modern Accounting Package.

 The Course will be started from the 2009-2010 Academic session on a self financial basis.
 In addition to this the computer course for Higher Secondary students (Both Arts & Commerce) will also be continued as earlier on self- sustaining basis.
